Entropic Thoughts

An Opinion is not a Take

An Opinion is not a Take

I see the word take way too much these days. I think people use it because it’s easy to produce and it doesn’t say very much other than “here comes something subjective.” I dislike it for those very reasons.

Here are some words I would prefer. Pick the one that best describes your relationship to the subjective statements about to come.

I prefer them because they communicate the relationship between the author and the subjective statements to come. A reaction is something immediate, or something that didn’t exist before the action. An opinion on the other hand is somewhat researched and contemplated. A position is something that has been taken out of practicality (we need to stand somewhere!) and can be changed. A stance is similar to position except possibly along the dimension of protection rather than exposure. A belief acknowledges a lack of evidence. A perspective is not a disagreement but focusing on different information. And so on.

All of these are more informative than “take” which means all of them and none of them at the same time. Use language to communicate the whole picture, not just as wrapping around the gift of your subjective statements.
